Dear Itosu-Ryu Members, Wado-Ryu Members, Ryuei-Ryu Members, Traditional Karate Practitioners, Head of Country, Senseis, Representatives, Competitors:

We invite you to join us for a wonderful event featuring Itosu-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, and Ryuei-Ryu styles and all styles of traditional karate practitioners in the Open Divisions. This event will offer Itosu-Ryu kata divisions, Wado-Ryu kata divisions, Ryuei-Ryu kata divisions, and open kata and kumite divisions.


Current members of Itosu-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, and Ryuei-Ryu in good standing. Also all styles are welcome to compete in the Open Divisions.


Hilton Costa Mesa (Host hotel where Welcome Party, Seminar and Friendship Party will be held).

Cost: $119 (mention Dento Karate). Additional $15 per person for triple and quad occupancy.

La Quinta Costa Mesa (About 2 miles from host hotel). Less expensive, call for current rates 1-800-753-3757.

Buses will provide transportation from The Hilton (host hotel) to and from Soka University gym (free of charge).

Seminar (entry fee $35)

Saturday night from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, this unique seminar will feature three Senseis: Sadaaki Sakagami, Soke of Itosu-Ryu, Tsuguo Sakumoto, President of Ryuei-Ryu, Hironori Otsuka III, Soke of Wado-Ryu and it will address the fundamentals (basics) of each style. There will also be a complete Q&A period.

Seminar entry fee is $35 for participant or spectator. All ages and levels welcome. Cash or check payable to PATMA, sorry, no credit cards.

Tickets can be purchased at the door before the seminar or in the Hilton Costa Mesa lobby on Friday, July 22 from 12 noon to 7pm. Tickets will be required in order to enter the room.

Friendship Party (cost $30)

Sunday night after Kumite Finals. Location: Hilton Hotel. Everyone welcome, good food, no host bar.

T-Shirts (cost $15)

Will be for sale in the Hilton lobby and at the tournament site.

Division Skill Levels

Beginner (Beg) Under 1 year of training
Novice (Nov) 1-2 years of training
Intermediate (Int) 2-3 years of training or Brown Belt with 3 years or less of training
Advanced (Adv) 3 or more years of training or Black Belt


Kata Rules

Flag System:

  • Two competitors will compete at the same time.
  • Medal Rounds: A different kata must be performed (except in Beginner/Novice Divisions)
  • All Divisions, including Open Divisions: A basic kata must be performed in first round.
  • In Ryu/Style Divisions, the prescribed katas must be followed (please see division list for details)
  • A competitor may compete in both his or her own style (If qualifications are met) and open divisions.

Kumite (WKF Modified) Rules

  • Time: Adult Male 3 minutes / Adult Female 2 minutes / Juniors 17yrs & under 1½ minutes.
  • All Divisions 17 yrs and under: First comptetitor to reach 8 points is declared winner.
  • Mandatory equipment: Male & Female: Mouthpiece, Red & Blue Gloves.
  • Optional equipment: Chest protection, head gear, shin -instep, cup
  • Glasses cannot be worn in kumite.




  • Kumite Referee Designated by Tournament Directors.
  • Kata Judges: Must be members of style being judged (except open kata divisions).
  • WKF adhere to attire. Judges may also compete.
  • Referee meeting Friday night after the Welcome Party at the Fountain Terrace Room of the Hilton, 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
  • Referee briefing Saturday 8:30AM and Sunday 8:30AM at Soka University VIP Room.
